Strings (America) Graham Pellettieri, June/July 2008

Both of these beginners collections are written for four violins and include a score, individual parts, and an audio CD. Each volume is written in several languages, including English, German, French, and Dutch. The author also has written Impro, Dual Band, and Music in a Box. What makes these books unique is the treatment of the violin parts: unlike traditional quartet voicings, all the violin parts in these editions are equal and players can choose their own colored part (green, yellow, blue or red). There are a few tunes that offer some unconvential approaches, such as 'Cowbow' in which pupils can play in the guitar position, or 'Crunch' in which players are asked to make grating sounds with their bow. 'Choices' even gives them a chance to choose which notes they play. With introductions for teachers, these books are suitable for instructors and beginning players who are interested in the basics of violin playing and reading music. They provide some fun pieces and will work well for group lessons and concerts for starting violin students who are looking to gain experience playing in an ensemble.
